Submission 1: Formal Letter

Subject: Self Introduction

Dear Mdm Fazilah

I am Tay Wan Xuan from Tutorial 3 of your Effective Communication lesson. I graduated in Green Building and Sustainability at Temasek Polytechnic and have managed to acquire knowledge on sustainable and passive designing as well as building management. Currently, I am a Year 1 student studying at Singapore Institute of Technology under Sustainable Infrastructure Engineering Building Services.

I have never thought that I would end up in the engineering field thus to say, I am fully interested in it at first would be a lie. With engineering, it made me realised I could create things that helps to solve problems and impact both the people and environment. I like the idea of seeing something getting made from nothing which is why engineering started to get interesting for me. Being able to come up with innovative ideas and designing it is also a plus point to my interest.

In terms of communication strength, I feel that I am good at listening. Since different people have different opinions, hearing them out first before proceeding a certain task is a way to minimise internal conflicts. For weakness, I am a shy person when it comes to interacting with a lot of strangers at one go. It tends to get a little overwhelming for me and sometimes it gets tricky to find appropriate words when describing my point of view.

Hence, I hope through this module I can gain a bit more confidence when trying to socialise with strangers as well as to be able to learn how to convey my message across in a clear and concise manner to my peers or to people who I would be working with in the near future.

Thank you for your time and patience in reading this.

Yours Sincerely

Tay Wan Xuan

  1. Hi Wan Xuan! I totally understand how you feel when it comes to interacting with strangers and when you are trying to point out your view to people. To be honest, you are on the right track because you are back in school and it is the best time and opportunity to strive for your goal and also to interact with as many strangers as possible. This enables you to create a network with them so that in the future you can look for them if you need any help. I hope you will do well for your course and remember to always look back at this post to remind yourself of your goal.

  2. Hi Wan Xuan,

I think we both share a similar perspective of engineering initially. I would not have expected myself to be in the field of engineering as well.

Through our group discussions, I believe that you are a good listener that provides constructive pointers and feedback. Though it might be intimidating to interact with individuals that you are not familiar with, I think you warm up to people quite quickly. We are able to work effectively for our group assignments.

Let us strive our best for this module!

    Yours Sincerely

  3. Greetings Wan Xuan

After reading through your blog, I personally agree with you when conversating with strangers, and getting the suitable words during conversation. Without understanding the person well, it is challenging to speak what our thoughts are as others may perceive our meaning differently. I believe that group projects and assignments will be a platform for you to understand and interact more people in the class with more confidence. Besides communication, I am intrigued that you are curious in how systems work and is creative at brainstorming ideas. I believe these skills will be helpful in the engineering field on green sustainable buildings.

All in all, I enjoyed reading through your blog as your sentences have a nice transition. I am confident that you are able to improve your weaknesses after this module.

    Sincerely
    Joshua

  4. Dear Wan Xuan

First of all, I am so happy to see a female student pursuing engineering. More students like you should pursue this profession where women are under-represented.

I hope you will overcome your shyness by volunteering answers without waiting to be called upon in class. I hope you will take opportunities to present with courage.

Best wishes for the module and your journey at SIT.

    Kind regards
    Faz (Mdm)
